With Cuba Fire Department's decision to cancel the spring derby slated for June 7, Total Destruction Demolition Productions has stepped in to make an offer to drivers who had planned on running.
As the hosts of the demolition derby action at the annual Ontario County Fairgrounds (July 22 and 26), TDDP has added to their Saturday program a Cuba-rules division.
The class will pay $1000 guaranteed, regardless of car count. It will cost $100 to register. The rules will be the same as the advertised rule book employed by Derby Dogs at Cuba.
In addition, the purse will be bolstered by full payback program for the division, and tow money will be paid to the tune of $1 per mile travel led by the winner from their home address on their driver's license to Canandaigua Motorsports Park (Canandaigua, NY).
"We thought this was a good pro-driver move," said TDDP head tech inspector Ben Haust after an appearance on the Crash Course Podcast, where he broke the news. "We're already there and we kind of see it as a bonus to the fans to see these cars...
"I wish there was more money out there, but we already have a full card and good payouts. But, since its an addition, we will take all that entry money and get it back into the hands of the drivers."
In short, if only two cars show up for this added class, then the winner of that head-to-head showdown will win $1,000, plus $200 in entry money, plus tow money from their home address to the grounds.
"Now, that $1,000, that's a sticking point. We don't know how we will pay it out because its no good to finish second and get nothing. Hopefully, we get a ton of cars and we can pay back better for second, third, whatever," Haust said.
“It's a two, three hour drive for me and I don't care about that,” said potential entrant Dan Bolton. “I'm just glad we get to run and don't have to cut.”
“It's the right direction. Saves all the guys with cars if they want to go to Canandaigua,” said another potential entrant Matt Gascon Jr. Gascon will likely have two cars there. “This is a big step forward on both sides.
“I really hope TDDP can bring something great to the big money shows to New York in 2015. I have always been a strong supporter of the TDDP shows.”
Haust is looking to get a feel for entries, asking drivers to enter by Memorial Day, not so much as a cut off, but to help set a guideline to be able to make public a 'number.'
"The only reason for that, is so we have an idea how many cars are coming, and we can post a more clear payout. It has NOTHING to do with how many cars are coming,” he said. “The more that enter, the better it will be for everyone.”
The $1,000 purse is not in any way contingent on entries.
The Compact Team Derby ranks have not been ignored.
The teams entered for the team derby have the option of running either Tuesday or Saturday; the best interest of all interested teams will be weighed and a decision will be made after Memorial Day.
Haust indicated the teams are welcome to run either night, and if they opt to run Tuesday, they will be going for $2,000-to-win (winning team) and only $200 to enter. If running Saturday, the money will be $1,200 to win.
"It's absolutely an incentive to run on Tuesday night," Haust said. "We've got big money compacts on Saturday and they are welcome to run in that pool, or to run in their own team show, like was planned in June."
Compact cars registered for the open small car division at Cuba are welcome to compete in the open compact show Saturday with Total Destruction on July 26; TDDP rules are the same for large and small cars and the compact Cuba rules are very similar to the TDDP build specs.
The card on Saturday July 26 already includes a $2,000-plus purse for the Total Destruction Rules full size class and a $1,500 purse for the compacts.
The full size class pays $1,500-to-win, $500 for second, $200 to the most aggressive driver and $100 to heat winners.
The compact class will be going for a $1,500 purse with break down on payout to be determined.
Tuesday's card will include qualifying heats and the headline $1,000-to-win Race to the Arena.
